Fans of the Fondren 5 will wait one extra month this year to enjoy the regular neighborhood celebration.
In an email and social media post late Wednesday, Fondren Renaissance Executive Director Jim Wilkirson said the event will kick off in April instead of March for a variety of reasons.
“With ongoing sidewalk construction on State Street that will move north, in front of Fondren Corner, and the historical probability of rain and/or cold the first week of March, we just decided it was best,” Wilkirson told Find It In Fondren. “If businesses want to ramp up their activities on March 1 anyway, that’s great. There just won’t be an organized effort neighborhood-wide.”
Wilkirson explained in the social post, “This year’s event, as last year’s, will be an organically, organized neighborhood effort with three areas of concentration – Duling Avenue, State Street and Rainbow Plaza. Each of these areas has a contact assigned to it and each will be reaching out to those in their area to ask for participation.” Additionally, he adds, “FRF will continue to be a clearinghouse to help organize the special activities and vendors associated with each month.”
Plans are to have Duling Avenue blocked off every month, according to the post, and Rainbow Plaza will have activities from Hops & Habanas to Cups and Fondren Corner and Sneaky Beans will anchor the State Street corridor.
“We’re looking forward to that monthly pop of energy we’ve grown so accustomed to every month,” Wilkirson said. “Fondren After 5 is a tradition that will stay strong thanks to the people who come out and enjoy the evening with their families and friends. That’s the magic of it.”
