Fondren’s Babalu Tacos & Tapas will open a second location in Memphis in 2014. The lease on the 5,000 square foot property, once occupied by TGI Fridays in the midtown neighborhood of Overton Square, was signed this week.

This is the second Babalu location for the Jackson-based Eat Here Brands, LLC, started by Bill Latham and Al Roberts. According to The Memphis Business Journal, construction will begin this fall at 2113 Madison Avenue and be completed in early 2014.

Latham told the Memphis Business Journal he chose Overton Sqaure for its atmosphere and fun experience, things complimentary to the Babalu concept and menu.

Tableside guacamole, signature cocktails and gourmet tacos are standouts of the menu along with an award-winning burger and other farm to table inspired dishes.

Lou Loeb, executive vice president of asset management for Loeb Properties Inc. told reporters that Babalu is a great concept that fills a void in the area and that he believes Babalu’s popularity there will be as great as it has been in their original Fondren location.

Latham and Roberts’ holdings include Babalu, Table 100 and Interim Restaurant & Bar in Memphis. The company also operates the Five Guys Burgers locations in the metro Jackson market. The pair once owned Amerigo and Char, both also in Jackson.

UPDATE: See what I Love Memphis had to say about their experiences at the now open restaurant!
