Volunteers are the heart and soul of any event. Just ask Salt Lake City, Utah’s Scott Ward, the race director of Color Me Rad. Ward was in town this week to work out some logistical aspects of their March 23 race here in Fondren and asked us to ask you for a favor.

“We need volunteers,” he said. “When you come out, you’re doing a lot of the work we wouldn’t be able to hire out to put on the event.” That event, a fun, non-timed 5k run or walk for all ages, benefits Friends of Children’s Hospital. “For each volunteer that comes out, we donate the funds to the charity for their hours of service.”

Shifts are available on three different days. “There are two shifts Thursday the 21st, two Friday the 22nd and two on Saturday the 23rd,” Ward explained. “The Saturday crew helps set up and then there’s the clean up crew.” And there is a perk for Thursday or Friday help. If you volunteer either of those days, you can run the race Saturday for free. “You just need to sign up to volunteer on the volunteer sign up page (linked below) and show up (to your volunteer shift). We will take care of you after you volunteer.”

The event is all about a good time. And it’s the same for the volunteers.”You’re going to have a great experience and you’ll get a shirt,” Ward said.

Fondren Renaissance is helping to bring the event to town as part of Zippity Doo Dah® Weekend and created a signup sheet online. But hurry, Ward added: “everyone wants to be on the color bomb squad and those slots fill up fastest.”
