Millsaps College Arts and Lecture Series opens Tuesday night with a bit of Irish flare. The 2012-2013 season will open with “The Máirtín de Cógaín Project: Stories and Songs, From Cork with Love!” at 7 p.m. in the Ford Academic Complex at Millsaps.
The Máirtín de Cógáin Project Concert is a group lead by Cork Renaissance man Máirtín de Cógáin, who is an entertainer of unending talent. A crowned All-Ireland Storytelling Champion twice over, a noted singer, a dancer and a heart-beating bodhrán (Irish drum) player, and actor, Máirtín has gathered a stable of the finest Irish-Yank musicians around him to bring the story of Cork to the States.
The show brings the unique view of romance from the south of Ireland. Ballads of love, friendship, betrayal and a love-often-overlooked are often overlooked when they are from one’s own city, and the Project burnishes them to their original luster, all the while time poking fun at either side of the adventure.
The Arts and Lecture Series is in its 45th year of presenting programs for the Jackson area. Part of the College’s community outreach mission, the series was created by volunteers, many of them Millsaps College alumni, to bring unique programs of music, literary, current events, history and more to the greater community. Many of the performers and lecturers are from Mississippi or have Mississippi connections. “Our goal with the series is to enlighten and entertain,” said Nola Gibson, executive director of the series.”
