There are two chances to enjoy live theater in Fondren this week, beginning tonight at Brent’s. Fondren Theatre Workshop is getting back to its roots and will focus on local playwrights via a monthly event they’re calling “Playwright Night,” to be held the first Tuesday of each month. The monthly readings will kick off tonight with Beth Kander’s “Scrambled,” winner of the 2012 Southeastern Theatre Conference Getchell award for best new play. This will be the Jackson premiere of this new work. Brent’s is sponsoring these events, offering food service starting at 6:30, with play readings to begin at 7:00 p.m. (Come early to place a food order. No orders will be taken after 7pm). FTW will also be soliciting works from local playwrights for future monthly play readings, and will be looking for volunteer actors to perform in the readings, as well. Details will be coming soon.

On Saturday, Fondren Theatre Workshop is at it again, this time at Broadmeadow United Methodist Church at 7:30pm for the 5th Ten Minute Play Project. They have only ONE NIGHT to write it. They have only ONE DAY to rehearse it. YOU have only ONE CHANCE to see it! Five teams of writers, directors, and actors will gather a mere 24 hours before show time to create a slate of brand new plays in a spontaneous burst of creativity that’s entertaining for the whole family! Admission is $7.00, payable at the door. Visa and Mastercard are accepted.
