Opened in February 2017, the dinner only (for now) eatery, Barrelhouse, brings a flavor to Fondren you can’t quite put your finger on.

Their menu has been called “New American” with a heavy dose of Southern inspiration and features regular favorites and seasonal specials.

“There’s Cajun,” Chef Stephen Kruger says, “with some French and Italian thrown in. It’s eclectic but familiar.”

Here are three dishes diners pick as favorites. Give them a try this weekend – or anytime!

BUFFALO CAULIFLOWER
Business in the front, party in the back (of your mouth) as these “buffalo-ed” veggies bring a flavorful kick to something otherwise ordinary. Enough to share – and then some. Start your meal here.

TUNA POKÉ NACHOS
A New York City inspired appetizer, Ahi Tuna, avocado, seaweed salad and sesame seeds are spread on wonton chips with a Hawaiian sauce, and spicy aioli. Treat the table – or treat them as your entree.

MEATBALLS
What could have been seen as an odd-ball menu entry has become an odds-on favorite. Get them in beef, chicken or pork, choice of sauce and, alone, as a sandwich or, as seen here, with Belhaven Pasta Co. pasta.

Barrelhouse is located at 3009 North State Street in the Fondren Strip between Wells Cleaners and Campbell’s Bakery.
