Did you know there are over 200 places to get barbecue in Mississippi?

That according to Jim Hatten, an entrepreneur who has created the Mississippi BBQ Trail, an on-line listing of restaurants serving southern favorites like ribs, pulled pork and sides.

Hatten cut his Greater Jackson Chamber of Commerce ribbon on Tuesday with a celebration at bbq joint, The Pig & Pint in Fondren.

“This has been a long time coming over last four years putting this together,” Hatten said of msbbqtrail.com.

The idea for the trail came about in 2011 when Hatten read an article about pork consumption in Texas and wondered about Mississippi’s stats. He then wondered how big the retail barbecue business was in Mississippi. “My research highlighted a rich and diverse industry with an important economic footprint,” he recounts. “I also found that this particular industry segment did not have a strong online presence. Tourists and local residents should be able to easily find a good place for lunch or dinner at a Mississippi bbq joint from a reliable online source.”

The Mississippi BBQ Trail provides a fun way to find your favorite BBQ joint, gas station BBQ and franchise BBQ so you can decide which one serves your favorite ribs while traveling through the state.



Hatten is launching a promotional campaign, complete with a printed guide and his honoring of a “BBQ Trail Bluesman of the Year.” That award went to Mr. Entertainer, The Bluesman McKinney Williams, at Tuesday’s ceremony.

“(The trail) fell right into who I am,” Hatten said of his love for barbecue. “I love meeting people, and telling stories. And it’s exciting to have a chance to talk about this industry and people who do this”
