Good Samaritan Center has opened online registration for their 3rd annual 12k’s for the Holidays Charity Run and Festival. The event is being held on Saturday, November 17 in Fondren. A 12k, 5k and free “kids’ run with Santa” one mile fun run will take place.
Good Sam executive director Kathy Clem reports two exciting additions to this year’s race: chip timing and a choice of cotton or technical tee with registration. Online registration is preferred and there is no extra cost to use the service. As always, a costume and stroller contest with prizes and a post race food and kids area will be offered.
“Two years ago, I wanted to put on a fun and funky holiday race to raise money for Good Sam,” Clem says. But, she says, she couldn’t do it alone. “I was hoping to get ten people to help me put on the race but ended up having 19 people accept the challenge and the rest is history.” Statistically speaking, the first 12k race (in 2010) was one of the biggest first-time races in Mississippi history. “We had to order shirts three different times.”Asked “why Fondren”, Clem says the choice of venue was never a question. “When originally planning our first race, we were courted to come to Ridgeland, Brandon, and Canton,” she tells us. “Somehow, the planning committee (made up of folks for all over the tri-county area) knew we needed to put on the race in Fondren. Now hundreds of people come from all over the state to race in this wonderful event.”
In the past two years, the 12k’s has raised $32,000 for Good Sam, a private, non-profit social service agency that helps families in crisis with clothing, food and other assistance.Nearly 900, including children, participated in 2011.
