From Millsaps College

Millsaps College professors are ranked among the best in the nation for the second consecutive year, according to The Princeton Review’s The Best 377 Colleges – 2013 Edition.

The Millsaps faculty won praise in The Princeton Review’s special Top 20 category: Professors Get High Marks, where Millsaps was ranked twelfth in the country.

“We love what we do, and we love bringing out the best in our students by encouraging them to think independently,” said Dr. Laura E. Franey, associate professor of English and chair of the Faculty Council. “How affirming to see that our students recognize the value of our teaching methods and appreciate our dedication to their learning.”

Student comments helped explain the ranking:

• “The school ‘offers great courses taught by charismatic professors’ who ‘bring the material to life … through their innovative teaching methods.’”
• “Professors always encourage students to discuss class material and voice their opinions and questions about it. They encourage you to form your own ideas.”
• “Students have praise for the education they are receiving saying, ‘coming out of Millsaps I will be fully prepared for grad school. My professors not only lecture, but they turn the material into hands-on learning opportunities,’ and ‘I seriously respect my school’s standard of excellence in hiring people who are wonderful at their jobs.’”

Only about 15 percent of America’s 2,500 four-year colleges and three colleges outside the U.S.A. are profiled in the book, which is The Princeton Review’s flagship college guide. It includes detailed profiles of the colleges with rating scores for all schools in eight categories, plus ranking lists of top 20 schools in the book in 62 categories based on The Princeton Review’s surveys of students attending the colleges.
