Millsaps Day in Fondren (with Photos!)

UPDATE: We’ve added a gallery of photos from today’s Millsaps Day. Check us out on Facebook!

A sea of purple will roll this way on Saturday from 11am – 4pm as Fondren welcomes Millsaps students, faculty, alumni and friends for the first ever Millsaps Day in Fondren. The event is a joint endeavor for the school and the Fondren Association of Businesses (Fab) and is welcomed by Find It In Fondren™. Fab president David Waugh says Fab has always been interested in promoting the business area to students at all colleges. “They often don’t discover us until their junior or senior year,” he says. Senior Jennifer Goebel of Dallas, Texas agrees and is thankful for the special emphasis. “Fondren has come a long way,” she says. “Even since my freshman year, I’ve seen a lot more being offered in this area.”

Many Fondren businesses will offer discounts for Millsaps students, employees and alumni. Kids activities, including a space jump and face painting, will be provided at St. Luke’s Methodist Church on Duling Avenue. Representatives from Millsaps will be available there, too, to answer questions about the college. Captain Ron Mills of the Fondren Express Trolley says he will offer a shuttle from 11am – 4pm from campus to the neighborhood. Live music will be hosted on two stages: Taylor Hildebrand at Sneaky Beans and Zach Lovett at Fondren Guitars from 12-2pm.

Megan James, director of First Year Experience and Fraternity and Sorority Life at Millsaps, says the event is intended to further engage the Millsaps community with Fondren. “We’re fortunate to have such a vibrant community near our campus,” she says. “Orientation leaders are encouraged to take all new students out to lunch and then spend the afternoon shopping and exploring.”

With Fondren businesses rolling out their purple carpets, Waugh hopes students will discover what Fondren has to offer. “We want them to know there is a place that welcomes them and wants to cater to them through their college years and beyond.”
