The July 4th Watermelon Classic celebrates its 30th anniversary this summer and registration is underway. Organized by the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame, the race is one of the largest in the area and is sponsored by Farm Bureau Insurance. The 5K Run/Walk also includes the Blue Cross Blue Shield of MS One Mile Run and a Tot Trot for ages 3 & under.

The Watermelon Classic 5k road race has been run in Jackson, MS every July 4th morning since 1983. With the illness and subsequent death of the race’s founder, Bill Johnson, the Museum took over organization of the race in 1997. Because of its annual holiday timing, the Watermelon Classic attracts a large, diverse field of entrants, ranging from major college scholarship runners and Olympic team members to Mom, Dad and the kids out to spend holiday time together.

To register stop by the Museum, download a form from the Sports Hall of Fame website or pick up a form at either Baptist Healthplex or Fleet Feet Sports. Discounted fees extend through June 26. There will be no race day registration. For more information on this family event, call the Museum at 601-982-8264.
