A new business has secured its place in Fondren. Armstong Security is officially open for business after moving in to Duling Hall. On Sunday, owner Michael “Mickey” Byrd met with his force of 30 to go over procedure and policy and welcome them to the new office. Started out of his home in Crystal Springs almost three years ago, Byrd’s firm came together after years in another career. “I was a nuclear engineer,” he said. “I retired to the Phillipines and was in an accident so I came back here.” Byrd says when he couldn’t find work, he started working as a guard. “I liked it so I decided I’d start my own company.”

Armstrong came to the neighborhood after working with Fondren Association of Businesses during Fondren After 5. “They were looking for a higher caliber of security,” Byrd said of his collaboration with Fab and its president, David Waugh. He credits Mike Peters for their new office space. “Mike worked it out for us to move in here.” And it’s a great fit for Byrd. “I like Fondren,” he said. “It’s probably one of the neatest places in Jackson.” Byrd cites the mix of restaurant and retail and how the area has been transformed from its former days. “It’s beautiful. (It) reminds me of New Orleans.”
