Fondren Theatre Workshop presents the debut staging of Unshelved, a new play by Beth Kander, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, January 6-7-8, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, January 9, at 2:00 p.m. at The Welty Commons Gallery, 719 N. Congress Street in Jackson. The staging is in anticipation of its presentation at the Mississippi Theatre Association Festival in Meridian. Performances will feature a talk-back with the playwright, director, and cast immediately following in the adjacent Congress Street Coffee Shop. All tickets are $10.00 and seating is limited; reservations are recommended by calling FTW at 601-982-2217. PLEASE DO NOT CALL THE WELTY COMMONS.
This special one-hour cutting of the play is directed by Denise Halbach and features Monte West, James Wood, Jordan Boyd, and Roxie Randle. Proceeds from the Jackson performances will help defray festival expenses for the group, with a portion going to benefit the MS Alzheimer’s Association. Unshelved beautifully and sensitively explores the question of on what – or whom – does your own identity depend? The play is one of two plays by Kander that have been selected as finalists at New Stage Theatre’s Eudora Welty New Play Series. Unshelved had its first public reading by Fondren Theatre Workshop in 2006; thereafter, Kander received a Literary Arts Fellowship grant in 2009 from the Mississippi Arts Commission to further her work on the script.
